Drawing on experience with energy transition in the Latrobe Valley, it was agreed that the Orbost district might benefit from early intervention to facilitate transition. The Latrobe Valley Authority’s (LVA) Smart Specialisation methodology was seen to be a useful approach for developing a roadmap for the future of the Orbost district.

“There have been many economic development plans for the Orbost district over the past 30 years mostly as a consequence of cutbacks in the major industry of the district – timber. The outcomes of these various plans has been limited."
"The Future of Orbost & District Project is different as it uses the quadruple helix approach to planning, bringing together Industry, Community, Government Sectors and Education & Training collaborating together to drive structural change far beyond the scope of what any one of the sectors could achieve alone.”
“Orbost Education Centre Learn Local supports the Orbost community and the Future of Orbost and district project as we all have a common goal. Working collaboratively and developing our community including pathways to education and employment.
A key focus for our organisation is providing opportunities for small and remote communities to access quality education and training as Learning changes lives!”
